Canon XSi (450D) Announced
Photography January 24th, 2008
As many Canon fans are awaiting an announcement on an updated full frame EOS 5D Mark II, Canon have come out with an update to its entry level DSLR - the XSi (450D).
The camera features a twelve megapixel CMOS sensor, 3.0″ LCD monitor, Live View with both AF modes (contrast-detect and passive), 14-bit processing and RAW, spot metering, improved AF, 3.5 fps continuous shooting, a larger viewfinder, SD/SDHC storage and a new higher capacity battery.
- 12.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor
- Canon’s EOS Integrated Cleaning System
- 3.5 frames per second
- 3.0” LCD with Live View shooting
- 9-point wide-area AF system
- DIGIC III image processor
- Compact and Lightweight body
The step up in improvements from the 400D to the 450D is much larger than what progress was made in the previous installment when Canon replaced the 350D with the 400D. Live View is slowly making its way across the whole line, along with 14-bit RAW, and a 3.0″ LCD monitor. These are too expected in the next edition of the 5D.
As a body targeted at those moving up from point-and-shoot camera, the megapixel count is something un-educated buyers take into account. While 12.2 megapixels stuffed into such a small sensor might not be so forgiving on noise at ISO 800 and above, it does sound impressive for Canon’s most affordable DSLR.
The Canon XSi is expected to start retailing in March 08.

That looks like a really nice camera, but I already have the 400D, so I’m not going to buy it.
Are you going to buy this Glenn?

more pixels doesn’t necessarily mean more noise.
the nikon d300 has a (small) 12.3 MP CMOS sensor with exceptional high-ISO performance.

sure, there’s noise. for me, 1600 is the limit on the d300; 3200 and 6400 have a bit too much noise
(this may be a bit of an unfair comparison, as the d300 is a step above the 40D, so not really comparable in price or features to a rebel: but more pixels in a small sensor doesn’t *necessarily* mean more noise.)

I was a bit surprised when I read it was SD/SDHC only. Perhaps this is the sign of things to come for this line of entry-level DSLRs from Canon?
I’m sure it’d be a neat camera. Live view is an excellent feature, but to me without some sort of flip-out screen it’s not as practical as it could be.

I parallel Calvin: the most surprising thing I saw was the SD over CompactFlash.
I couldn’t care less about Live View. TTL SLRs have always had a live view… You look into the eyepiece. :-)

I’m particularly disappointed to find out that this model does not support compact flash. That, along with the high price for an ‘entry level’ model, will strongly affect my decision to purchase the 450d. Unless reviews are particularly strong, I will look into another brand/model.

Barry, this is entry-level for dSLRs, and the determining factor shouldn’t be the camera itself. It should be the glass first, the history of the company and the entire lineup of cameras second, and other factors third.
Do you want to begin investing in Canon glass or Nikon glass (or Sony/Olympus/etc. glass)??
I switched from a 400D to a 5D about a year ago. I paid more for one piece of glass (70-200 f/2.8L IS) than I did for the camera (after rebates).
That being said, the 400D is now going to be cheaper in price, and may be a suitably good camera for you too. It’s even CompactFlash.

Shame! I just bought the 400D.
Oh well, I guess it doesn’t make that much difference to me, as I have no idea how to use the camera I currently have! :P

that sucks. Right as my sister buys the Rebel XTI…

I think I will be upgrading my Canon 350D to this 450D this summer as it looks sweet!
January 26th, 2008 at 7:51 am
I’m interested in picking up the 450D as my first DSLR camera. This past week I had made plans to upgrade to a DSLR and was looking at the Canon XTi, as I have used Canon’s before and I’m familiar with them. Doing some research I found that the 450D was going to be announced so I decided to hold off. I wish the release was sooner, but I suppose it’ll be worth the wait. I want to use the EyeFi card with the camera, and since this supports SD that’ll work great.

i own the 400d with the sigma 28-300mm macro lens but i feel that this camera just doesnt have enough extras compared to my current camera to make me want to upgrade to it, instead i am drawn towards the 40d and the 5d as they are more semi pro/pro instead of consumer level and have much more exciting features

Daniel I think you will notice that there are professionals out there using 40Ds 5Ds even the older 30Ds and 20Ds don’t be restricted by the equipment you use. Make the most of it, get out and enjoy it

Pentax line-up is getting more attractive. Build quality and IS in the body has always been interesting to me. The real limiting factor is sensor size and the Fuji s100fs looks like a potential front runner.

Yep I’m waiting to see what the Fuji S100fs can do and read reviews. I’m so over lugging glass around. I’m also very impressed with Fuji’s image quality at high ISO.

Fuji S100fs, these photographs were taken with this camera. Mostly dimlight / nightshots. Look at EXIF and properties for some photographs, only there you could see it was taken by this camera. In his enthousiast text, he did not mentioned it. http://hugopoon.blogspot.com/
