It’s Your Turn To Talk
Blogging December 29th, 2007Stopping in for a very short and brief message this evening - a message regarding topical content. What exactly would you like me to blog about? For the past year I’ve blogged about things on my mind and things happening in the general technology world.
Now I’ve decided to let you, the readers take a little more of a hands on approach and want you to leave your suggestions for topics you’d like to see me write about in the comments area below and I’ll begin to make my way through them.
Creating content you want to read, rather than the usual process of me picking something to write about. It’ll be the other way around for a while. Voice your opinion. What do you want to read about? I know many are keen on the Lightroom review, I best be working on it. It’s first on the list.

I have been reading this blog and watched your videos ever since I discovered your work back in spring this year - and I am from Denmark! You actually went to the very top of my bookmark listing in just one week.
My next year wishes for you are to deliver more videos on YouTube. Sometimes you speak too fast and I have to rewind. But that is probably just me and because I am Danish.
I would really like for you to get your hands on more hardware from Apple. Keep on the good reviews, mix it with some accessories that goes with Mac, common software for Mac OS X Leopard - and you have yourself a daily user.
Actually, when I think of it you have got that already. But I would like you to post regularly instead of a lot now and then. I get so disappointed when I do not find anything new on GlennWolsey.com or your YouTube site.

How about some photography tips? Or how to operate a dSLR?
December 29th, 2007 at 11:44 pm
All great suggestions. Keep them coming.
December 29th, 2007 at 11:59 pm
Tips on organization, software reviews, that kind of stuff. But not trivial posts that signal to me that you can’t find things to write about. For me specifically I would like to hear about organization in relation to school and other contexts, and you know, sort of Zen Habits type topics, coupled with technology discussion of course… You get the idea. I might add that a New Years Resolution post might be good.
No offense to Glenn, but in my honest opinion this blog has seen a decline in recent months, especially when compared to it’s beginning when you stuck by the one post a day rule. I know you could rebut this view by saying that quality over quantity is more important, but as I said, in recent times, I feel that this block has been lacking both.
So, to sum it up, I think posting on a more frequent basis about the ideas mentioned in this string of comments is the thing to do if you wish to continue your success.

I would like what jack suggest, “Tips on organization, software reviews” that would be great and maybe a debate on Aperture vs Lightroom would be good because I just can decide which one to get.

I-don’t-know-how-to-fill-my-blog part 2. Now you even have to ask your readers about ideas…
How about acquiring some solid technical knowledge before claiming to run a technology-focused website? I mean, come on, you don’t even design anything of your own website. How am I supposed to take you seriously when you first purchase a MacPro (not that you needed one for what you do on the computer) only to sell it a couple of weeks later to buy a laptop? Or the Macheist “disaster” which was rather embarrassing…
Your reviews are about as shallow was they come because you lack technical knowledge. Your video posts are pop- but don’t belong in the tech world. Improve your technical knowledge, learn how to code, etc. In short, give your reviews some debt.
Sure, you could care less what I think, but to me you’re just a 15 y/o teeny who likes to play with toys and thinks he’s an Apple web celeb- you’re not.
However, calling you names etc. like some haters here do on a regular basis is entirely inappropriate.
December 30th, 2007 at 1:11 am
Ah, I like some of your photography and I think you’re talented in this regard. Maybe that’s an area to focus on…
Aloha.
December 30th, 2007 at 1:23 am
Hi Glenn,
I would say that you can blog about everything you want, it’s your weblog and therefore you should decide about topics you want to blog.
Keep up the good work.
December 30th, 2007 at 2:25 am
@ Kelly, nothing is wrong with asking readers what they like him to blog about, surely you could not ask him to blog about culinary arts or some other weird topic, you’d make recommendations that are within the mac/photography.
Have you even taken any time to look what fueled this post? The previous post was the one that fueled it. With comments like “Please kill yourself. No one cares about your life. Thank you” and “I second Damien’s comments. Get off the Internet you self-indulged faggot.” Comments like that are very demotivating i’m pretty sure he’s received feedback like that on more than one post. So in that regard it is only normal for Glenn to ask what you what him to write about, personally i’d ask too, but Glenn, continue writing the way you write, your blog is growing, you’ll have the assholes who’ll wan’t to bash and criticize you, look past the bad and focus on the good, your blog must be of some value if you constantly get products to review from companies, beleive it or not not all blogs get that opportunity. Your an excellent writer in the making, continue on this trend and your sure to be one of the best writers the world has ever seen, you like Macs, so write about them, you like photography so write about it, as a matter a fact, write about anything you want, let people say what they will.
My only gripe with your blog is that you need to post more often, like a reader said in an earlier comment “I get so disappointed when I do not find anything new on GlennWolsey.com or your YouTube site.” Stick in there, and continue your writing.
P.S It’s like your a celebrity that some people will inevitably not like. For eg. Britney Spears is someone everyone is digusted with, but still people write and talk about her lol.
Cheers,
Gordon Swaby

I’ve been reading your blog for about 3 months now. And i like it very much.
If i want something new in it it would be. Photograf tip/guides “how-to-do” Both in editing and shooting. Otherwize its great just the way it is. And i would really really love a review on the Macbook Pro you just got.
So ill just give thumbs up to whatever we will see here in 2008.
Ciao~

I’ve delved into your Archives and saw you’ve written quite a bit on productivity. I work from home but have yet to settle on a routine that really maximizes my organization and productivity skills. In other words, I totally suck when it comes to sticking to a routine and getting work done. I have trouble keeping on top of what’s got to get done. The fact that you’re juggling school as well as making this blog a success suggests you know what you’re doing on that front, so I’d love more productivity related posts.
In regards to Jack’s thoughts on the quality of the blog declining; I only feel the quality has dropped since the Mac Heist incident. Since then your blog has attracted quite a few idiots. It’s not the content of your posts that have suffered, simply the spam in the comments section from people who want to voice their ‘disapproval’. The quality comments from readers are getting lost amongst the spam. People are asking questions related to what you blogged about, but it’s the idiots that are receiving your attention and getting a reply. I think you should clamp down and ban anyone who feels the need to criticize you needlessly.
December 30th, 2007 at 3:30 am
I agree with @Arch in that you should provide more about your photography skills. It’s pretty clear that you’re very well verse with the platform that is Apple but your photography is very compelling as well, so behind the scene tips on it would be great.

As the victim of two hard drive failures, I’d like to see an in-depth series on various backup methods: incremental, off-site, disk imaging, etc. Not just the pros and cons but tutorials also.
I’m looking forward to the article on Lightroom.
December 30th, 2007 at 4:32 am
Glenn, I’d like to see you focus on your videos a lot too, yes. I miss the frequency of them. In your videos though, I think you shouldn’t be afraid to get a bit more personal. I love your Q&A videos, but maybe you should stick a few random ones in there to let the viewer get to know you a bit better.
As for your writing and this blog, I like the suggestion above about how to operate a DSLR. I know I’d read that series. And maybe just like I said, be a little more personal. Let us in on your setup stories, any wishes you have for Apple, things like that would be fun. :)
December 30th, 2007 at 5:05 am
Having just bought a DSLR, I would love to hear some photography tips, as well as how you shoot, and your photography workflow. Keep the videos coming too. They are great.
December 30th, 2007 at 5:19 am
Glenn,
I find your blog and video refreshing and they help those of us who are less capable. The videos help because they are relatively brief and to the point. I have just purchased a Canon 40D, my first dSLR and would like some help with digital photography as I jump in head first.
Keep it coming, I don’t know how you find the time to do all of this and keep up with your life!
December 30th, 2007 at 5:24 am
So you either really ran out of stuff to write about or you’re charging your “empty words” dictionary for another contentless post :)
If you have nothing to tell, leave it that way, we’ll notice. No need to share those hard feelings…
December 30th, 2007 at 6:22 am
Email workflows, productivity tips and productivity tips ! Oh yeah, I forgot : PRODUCTIVITY TIPS ! :D THANKS GLENN, YOU’RE THE GUY !
December 30th, 2007 at 6:29 am
I have faith that you will find something to write about, instead of these filler posts (like Kelly is saying). I’m sticking around for content for you more than anyone else because I believe that you truly have some potential. That potential isn’t showing itself right now, but I used to see it and I expect to see it in the future.
If you need ideas, try more interviews. You said you’d try to make those more regular, and you never did. What i Really suggest is that you start to care more about this blog, because it seems like it is starting to decline like other commenters have said. I, like many other readers, am still here for you. Now, you need to be original, creative, and a reliable reader for us.
December 30th, 2007 at 6:42 am
Glenn,
I do not know if I have told you this before, but “behind every successful person, is a pack of people who are going to continually try and bring you down”. Usually the most successful people strive on things like these comments, simply because this means they are going above and beyond.
Best wishes for 2008

Hi Glenn,
I’m very excited about the Lightroom review. I’d also like to point out that on your front page the BitClamp, and Advertise Here Forever ads have an orange border around them in FireFox. This is usually fixed by adding a no border tag. I just checked your site in Safari and it looks normal. Keep up the blogging!
December 30th, 2007 at 10:49 am
This is exactly the type of thing I’m developing Skribit for. :-) Let me know if you want to test it out.
December 30th, 2007 at 11:09 am
I’m going to have to partially agree with Kelly, in the sense that you should expand your knowledge in order to beef up reviews. Maybe learn some more about photography so you can write posts about that, because to me, writing posts about what lenses you have/bought/will buy/must buy/got damaged isn’t really so much photography based. The workflow/how I do things posts are getting a bit old (basically, don’t go about explaining your photography workflow, it’s far less interesting than other potential photography posts).
Actually, come to think of it, you shouldn’t really post about photography. What I find to be interesting is when people post a photo, and then tell a backstory (yeah yeah I’ve been planning to do these kinds of posts for a while but then I get lazy). Which, in turn, results in you having to take photos with greater depth, rather than macro shots of flowers. It’s sort of a two in one goal, yeah? I can’t exactly say your recent photos have been great. Seems like you’re just testing out lenses and stuff. I’d buy some photography books (non informative one, just ones displaying photos from different photographers and such. Good for inspiration and for just keeping around. I own quite a few and they do inspire.
As for the tech content, as I said, learn some more (example, your speaker review) so you can beef it up. The speaker review was way too vague and I could tell that you knew dead nothing about speakers from the first sentence. Know what you’re writing about, it’ll help generate greater content.
December 30th, 2007 at 11:28 am
Paul totally beat me to it but I was going to suggest Skribit too. Anyway just keep going dude, write more often and just do your thing, some people will love it, others will hate it. That’s life.
I think us young people from NZ have a lot to say :)
December 30th, 2007 at 3:30 pm
I also says : “Some easy Photography tips”
Because..I (Mostly all) likes your way of presentation and so the readers will easly understand what you wanted to say.
Some easy steps that to be considered on taking a Quick Shot will be helpful, Sharing your views on photography will be a greate idea.
I saw you are giving Some informations about the lenses used to take a photograph bellow you flickr photos, Some more information will also get more user comments.
Thankyou.

I always love reading new/different productivity/GTD methods. Reviews on new and upcoming productivity software is always welcome in my book. I too like writeups on personal photography habits pertaining to dslr photography.
December 31st, 2007 at 12:59 am
I agree with NKJ and Catilyn, I also get disappointed when I dont any new vdo on youtube or any new post on GlennWolsey.com. I would like to see some tutorials about some Mac Softwares which are in your daily use or on the OS itself. Some apple hardware tips, how to set them up, things like that. You can get more personal, I would love to see your room some day :)
But you are doing a great job, I dont get bored while I am visiting your blog or watching ur episodes. Keep up the good work. God bless you and a very Happy New Year to you all.
Cheers.

Echo 100% what Alec Feld wrote. I’d rather see less frequent, in depth posts in which you display a clear and complete understanding of what you are writing about rather than posts in which you do not.
December 31st, 2007 at 10:05 pm
I think you’re doing a great job. I’m not really interested in the photography portion of your blog, but I enjoy the (computer) hardware reviews. You should be happy you have “haters” it means your growing.
Good luck in 2008.

I think this is a… not exactly *stupid*, but perhaps *uninformed* thing to ask of your readers.
If I want to read something about topic X, I will of course find a blog that writes about X in a style I like. The reason people read your blog, is because the like the content, and the style you use to write about your chosen content. You can’t ask your existing readers what they want you to write about… because by the very fact of them being your readers, they want to read what you are already writing about.
Not that this helps you, but I thought I’d put it down d-:
