Perfectly Executed: The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
Apple October 9th, 2007
The recently introduced iTunes Wi-Fi Store is something I’ve been waiting on for a long time. In the past I’d heard people talking about how they’d love to be able to purchase music directly on their iPod over Wi-Fi - now they can with the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store.
I must say, this is one of the smarter moves Apple has made in recent times (and they’ve made a few). The Wi-Fi music store allows you to browse the full catalog of music on the iTunes Store and also offers convenient access to featured and top ten lists, while searching for your favorite artist is effortless.
The main attraction is the simplicity of the store - Apple have made it almost too easy to purchase music. After turning on your iPod touch/iPhone you’re just three touches away from making a purchase. I’m sure this will be a huge incremental money maker for Apple as I’ve already been tempted many times to purchase music as I’ve been lying in bed listening to podcasts, I don’t think the store functions could have been planned out any more gracefully.
Apple also made a smart move with their store icon placement as 37signals recently pointed out. Instead of placing the store icon next in order on the home-screen - Apple pushed the icon to the right of screen above the music button. In my eyes it’s an excellent design decision from Apple, as pointed out, this is the only button on the home screen which incrementally makes Apple any money. They way it’s emphasized has been perfectly executed.
The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store has been perfectly executed in both form and function. If this is a sign of things to come from Apple’s mobile platform software division - I’m excited.

Very smart move from Apple. Looks like they’ll be making a ton of cash from impulse buyers, too. If I had an iPod touch or iPhone, this is likely something I would use - even though I rarely find myself making purchases from the iTunes store, so there you go. Shows they’re doing something right. Consumers like convenience :)

One more thing so we can be lazyier. I think that this makes it so much easier to buy music, than just download it from limewire or something. I can see myself now lying on my bed buying many songs, and then relising how much money I spent. O man. THis looks to be bad for me. But seriosly, with this, what’s next for apple?

The iTunes Store is the big reason why losing my apps to upgrade to 1.1.1 was worth it. I haven’t bought anything yet, but the way you preview a song is genius.

Now Apple just needs to add Wireless Syncing. or at least downloading and subscribing to podcasts via Wi-Fi…

I think the real smart move on Apple’s part is the fact that they require you to have an iTunes account with a credit card or paypal attached before you use the device. They make it so easy that you don’t even think the money is being taken out of your account.
I agree with Chris though. I would really like to see the ability to sync wirelessly and download podcasts directly to the device. I see that coming in the future though.

This is one of the many reasons as to why I wanted the iPod touch. However, I suppose my iPod classic will do me over for now.

I like this feature a lot. It’s very good for impulse buying, which helps Apple’s bottom line. However, I just wish that it would follow the steps of the iTunes Music Store into becoming the iTunes Store with full video capabilities. Since the iPhone is such a great product to watch TV shows and movies, it should be able to buy them instantly. If downloading takes up too much space, then put it in queue and whenever the first time you sync it with iTunes, it’ll download.

That sounds really good. However it would tempt me into fate buying too many songs from someone else’s money! I have previously seen photos of the iPod Touch, but you’re pictures make me go yum (and make my bank account ready to shrivel)! Plus, some of the stuff related to design you note is subtle but brilliant. Its the kind of stuff that makes me love reading other people’s opinions.
Plus, Demetrey’s idea is very good. It could have come straight from Apple, and probably should have!

Good to hear it works well.
Haha I’ve noticed the same thing right now with iTunes on my computer…I bet it would only get worse being on an iPod.
Glenn: I’m assuming downloads are just as quick as on your computer? And does the syncing back to your computer work well?
October 10th, 2007 at 1:49 pm
Actually, I’m in the habit of logging out of my iTunes Account on my mac, because I find that if I were to stay logged in, it would be to easy to impulse buy. Now it always asks me for my password, so I have to think about whether I really want it or not.

I went to an Apple Store today, and EVERY time I go to an Apple Store to look at the iPod touch, I go to the iTWFMS and I click Buy, hoping some idiot left his account logged in, so I could download a song and see the little song pop down into the downloads pane. It’s very tempting, and I don’t even own an iPod touch… yet!
October 10th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
I probably should do that and I’m sure it would save me a bit of money, but I have a pretty hefty iTunes gift card right now so I think I’ll leave it on for now at least. ;)

Apple has done a really nice job with the store. They have made it even easier to spend money.
I also hope they include audio podcasts, too.
October 10th, 2007 at 8:37 pm
Interested in the thoughts of those that have the touch, or an iPhone for that matter, and whether they think it’d be easy to navigate while driving? I’m thinking this would be a sweet device for car audio, but just unsure if it’ll be too difficult to control while one hand is on the driving wheel, and the touch is in a dock for example.
October 10th, 2007 at 9:43 pm
Podcasts would be a great addition. I’d love to be able to browse through lots of free content while on the go to stock up on viewable video/audio content.
October 10th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
I wish they would do this so badly. Then I wouldn’t have any cords left. I guess I am just fine with leaving my dock at the edge of my desk so it will hide the cords.
Could it work via Bluetooth?
October 11th, 2007 at 7:35 am
I don’t think there would be any benefit of using Bluetooth. Bluetooth is much slower than wifi.
October 11th, 2007 at 8:59 am
To be 100% honest, I don’t care if I can buy music wirelessly; I’ll still be going to the store to purchase a good old CD.
October 11th, 2007 at 9:01 am
On a side note, however, good job on the post. I’ll be interested to see how this goes over in the future.
October 11th, 2007 at 9:03 am
On yet another side note…
@Michael Mistretta: Wireless synching is likely too slow for most people to fully replace a cord.
October 11th, 2007 at 9:51 am
This looks great! You can preview songs, right?
October 11th, 2007 at 10:10 am
Right now I think you’re right. In the near future some new technology is sure to spring up and be as fast (hopefully faster) than USB 2.0.
Why do you feel the need to buy CDs vs songs online?
October 12th, 2007 at 4:35 am
i can’t wait till i get mine
October 12th, 2007 at 5:15 am
Yeah, it gives you the ability to preview - 30 second previews just like the regular iTS.
October 12th, 2007 at 5:16 am
good point on the icon placement. i also like how it’s pointing to the iPod icon below it, as in “download straight to the music player”
October 12th, 2007 at 9:33 am
Mostly the lack of a reliable DRM-free provider, and quality. As another reason, if I’m paying money for music, I want something to hold.
October 13th, 2007 at 9:11 am
The iPhone is brilliant much better than the ipod Touch…but still great blog post! KEep it up!
October 13th, 2007 at 9:19 am
I just realised that I am completely wrong!… I didnt realise the discussion topic was the Music Store! sorry!
October 13th, 2007 at 10:21 am
So you commented without reading the article? Niice. I reckon this whole “prize-for-the-top-poster” thing is making the blood rush to people’s heads, Glenn.
October 13th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
Just to confirm: Can you buy DRM-free songs from the Wifi Store? All of the demos show the normal downloads
October 13th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
DRM free songs can be purchased too. They have the same icon but it features a little plus in the bottom right corner.
October 14th, 2007 at 1:57 am
I assume that you can’t choose between DRM-free and DRMed songs while on the device. That preference would have to be made on the computer?
October 14th, 2007 at 6:01 am
No, both can be purchased no matter what you’re preference, I believe.
October 14th, 2007 at 4:33 pm
It really depends on the strength of your connection, the amount of items synced, and the strength of the hardware being synced. I can sync a good three CD’s to my AppleTV in about a minute. Sure the initial sync would take a while, but most people don’t add gobs of things to their library. I can understand video though.
October 17th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
I think that just sold the Michael on the iTunes Store.. After all, if they didn’t sell DRM-free music, he wouldn’t be using the WiFi store at all :P
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:15 am
i hate my ipod touch 8gb
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:58 am
What don’t you like about it?
