What Mac Apps Do You Use On A Daily Basis?
Apple June 26th, 2007
I have an array of application which I use on a regular daily basis for fun, work, and to get specific things done. They range from office application right through to games, what exactly do I use?
Information And Organization
OmniFocus is employed as my universal to-do list. All tasks which enter my world are entered into OmniFocus so I can take care of them later. I like having a dedicated to-do application which allows me to clear my head and get things out of the way.
NewsFire is still my RSS reader of choice. I read over 100 feeds on a daily basis and NewsFire allows me to sort through them quickly and efficiently. I thoroughly enjoy the interface of the application and the way it manages my feeds intelligently.
Mail/Safari are two applications which I’m constantly browsing through to read and gather information, get things done, and waste time… Most of my digital tasks and to-do’s are generated through Mail, and most of them are completed using my web browser of choice, Safari.
Twitterrific is an application I use more than once daily..50 times would be more accurate. I’m constantly receiving updates from friends on Twitter via Twitterrific, along with using it to post updates. Twitterrific is by far one of my most active applications.
The Entertainment Bunch
yFlicks fills in as my “video manager.” Every video I download gets stored within my yFlicks library which is Spotlight searchable making watching and collecting videos enjoyable.
Delicious Library is used to keep a catalog of all my purchased movies, video games, and books. I have shelves setup for Xbox games, Playstation 2 games, and shelves for DVDs stores in different rooms. I really enjoy been able to see all my media virtually in front of me on call.
iTunes is one application I believe all Mac users (and most PC users) have open all day. I’m no exception. iTunes is open 24/7 serving, downloading, and playing media. I couldn’t live without this application, and that will become more-so once Apple release the iPhone which relies on iTunes to sync contacts and media.
Skype. No day would be the same without a rush of constant calls coming through, my days wouldn’t be the same without this application. I rely on Skype to keep in contact with friends, clients, and family around the globe.
How about you, what applications are you using on a daily basis on your Macintosh?

OmniFocus, iTunes, Mail, NewsFire, and Skype are already taken but I still use iChat for some Video Conferencing. Another app I use a lot is Coda from Panic. This is an awesome web designing app which takes place of the 2 other apps I used to have open “Transmit and TextMate”. I’m only starting to use iCal as my calendar. That paired with OmniFocus makes my life quite a bit more productive.
PS: I think you mean that you “rely” on skype not to “reply” on it. =P

Some apps that I always have open:
• Twitterrific (can’t stop tweeting)
• Skype / iChat / Colloquy
• Mail / Safari
• Coda / Textmate
• NetNewsWire (had a bad experience with the NF dev)
• iTunes / CoverSutra
• Preview / Quicktime

iChat
Mail
Safari
iTunes
Newsfire
Dashboard
Quicksilver
Twitterrific
(All Open All Day)
Occasionally
Colloquy
Photoshop
Picturesque
Adium
Skype
Coda
Anyway, good post. I want OmniFocus, now. It may make me switch back from Analog to digital for GTD. And, have you tried GTD Glenn? I’m sure you would like it, seems very “you”.
June 26th, 2007 at 3:31 pm
The usual four are Safari, NetNewsWire, Mail and iTunes. I write in Journler. I sometimes pop open Adium (not too often, though). Preview gets kind of heavily used, as does ImageWell when I’m creating graphics for blog posts. As for small apps that are open 24/7, that’d be CoverSutra, Twitterrific, AntiRSI, and Quicksilver.

I’m new to web design… and to Macs for that matter. But here’s what I’ve been using the last couple of weeks as a new Mac user.
* Adium for chat
* Firefox to browse the Internet
* Itunes for listening pleasure
* Dashboard for Tickspot time tracking tool
* Linotype Font Explorer for Mac for font viewing
* StickyWindows for placing windows like tabs on the side of the screen
Here’s some of the ones I’ve been wanting to use…
* Quicksilver
* Skitch
Got any other recommendations for “must-have” Mac apps?

I used to despise iPhoto because of how long it took to load and how clunky-seeming it was, but as my photography archive grew, it was the only tool I could use to keep track of it all, so now I use that daily (at least until I fork over the money for Aperture).
I also use the obvious ones: Firefox, Adium, and iTunes
June 26th, 2007 at 11:01 pm
alphabetically…
adium (or ichat/skype for video), aperture, aqua data studio, camino, cssedit, (dashboard), itunes, mail, netnewswire, oxygen, parallels, quicksilver, retrospect or superduper!, skitch, textmate, twitterific
on more photographically inclined days (which is not *every* day), I use aperture, doubletake, lightzone, photomatix

I’m an windows guy:
Firefox and Gmail for web/email

Woops, thanks for the heads up Kiro.
FireFox counts as a Mac app ;-)
I used to use iPhoto as my main image storage/editing application before I moved to Aperture. You’ll be much happier when you move away from iPhoto, Aperture is amazing.
We need to rip you away from that windows machine Dumitru, you’d be much happier on the Mac ;-)
Because all my work relies on these applications. I do most of my blogging and writing inside Safari, and use the others apps as information organizers/receivers.
Sounds interesting! Care to elaborate?

I’ve been recently using the trial version of Daylite 3 and I must say that I’m quite impressed. Though the price is very steep, I think I’ve found my ultimate solution for time management. Don’t take my word for it, watch what Leo Laporte had to say on the video demo found on their front page.
Edit: Glenn, I noticed you’re still using the edit comments plugin. The author of the plugin warns that there are secuirty issues and is not recommended until further development is made.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
Hey Teddy. Thanks for the note regarding the plugin, I’ll go and disable it now so avoid any problems :-) Daylite 3 looks pretty cool, I’m going to have to download it and see it it fits into the way I work. Thanks again for the link & heads-up.

Hey mate, nice site (first post but I’ve had it bookmarked for a little while). Thanks for the post, I found some of the applications you recommended very useful, if not, very cool indeed :)
The only applications I can think of that people may find useful aside from the norm is iSquint: a quick and easy way to squeeze your video onto your iPod (also see VisualHub for more video formats). I’ve purchased CS3 web premium also and I have to say that I am amazed by the array of new features and tools not to mention the slicker UI.
I’ll write back with anything else of interest :)

Glad you found some of the recommendations useful Jordan - if you ever have any questions feel free to leave a comment and I’ll do my best to help you out.
