Parkside Media Macguide Magazine: The End
Apple, Media, Personal June 25th, 2007I have had some idea that something was happening inside Parkside Media on Macguide over the past month or two, and today I got comfirmation. Macguide, the magazine I’ve been writing to for over a year now is shutting up shop on the title due to poor advertising sales over the last few issues.
This hasn’t come to sudden as I’ve been suspecting something was up for months, but it leaves me out of the world of print production, in hindsight it has freed up much more time I can use to focus on online projects and more quality blog content.
Parkside Media publish 6 titles including Macguide, which has now been slimmed down to 5. There are two other titles I’d be interested in writing for in the future but at the moment I want to focus on online media which is where I see the majority of the audience heading. As much as I hate to admit it, print media is on its way out - things are evolving - generations are changing.
What does this change for me? Less stress, more free time. It has seem to become a trend recently, I’ve felt much more loose and relaxed after dropping a few projects. I’ve become much more focused on what I’m doing, although there are many avenues I’d love to explore over the next 12-18 months. I have a large scale project in the planning stages at the moment and it’s something to stay - it won’t be a quick hit or miss.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank and dedicate this post to Parkside Media, Macguide, and more specifically Mark Webster for the opportunities he opened up for me over the past 12 months. It has been a pleasure working with you Mark, I hope to catch up again sometime in the future. Good luck with everything! For me, it’s only upward and beyond from here.

Aw, that must suck. Well, at least you had the opportunity to write for a print production. Like you said, now you have more time to devote online :)

Print media might be on the way out, but I don’t think it’ll ever vanish. Nothing quite like picking up a print magazine and get out in the sun, or on the sofa, or bed.
Good luck future venues though! I hope and guess that you learned a lot from this experience.

I hate it when things like that happen, but they do happen. One of the things about writing for print media is that it’s “metaphorically speaking” set in stone. It’s permanent. You got to write for something that was tactile. That’s pretty cool. There are many pros and cons to this like you mentioned and I’m sure the pros outweigh the cons. I can’t wait to see this huge project that you’re working on.
The only place left to go is up!

I called up the head of Parkside Media this morning to talk about the contract they sent me to release previous work for use on the Parkside website, and while I was talking mentioned the possibility of freelance openings on their technology title Tone. I think I might send something through to the Tone editor to keep myself in the printed media business. It could be fun.

I still havnt recieved my last copy yet, I was seriously thinking of canceling my subscription anyway and subscribing to DPhoto as I have been getting so much more out of there articles.
I have met Mark a few times and feel sorry for him as he has put his heart into this. Any news on what hes doing now?
