5 People Who Inspire Me In Different Fields
Personal May 9th, 2007Everyone has places they go, things they do, or things they look at to gain inspiration to keep them motivated on the task in hand. I am no different, no matter what I’m doing, these 5 people/things never fail to inspire me to do great things.
Derek Punsalan
Derek Punsalan’s blog 5ThirtyOne remains at the top of my RSS reader as my favorite personal blog, just as it has since I started reading just over 12 months ago.
Derek is a freelance designer by day, blogger by night. I have been truly inspired with some of the design work he has done inthe past, in particular, Sylvia Loh and his personal portfolio. Derek is another designer who has a thing for constantly pushing out re-designs for his blog, in the past 6 months I can count 3 different designs which have hailed the home-page of 5ThirtyOne.
Derek’s content is always a joy to read, his lengthy and well thought-out articles are a source of knowledge within themselves, he posts many enjoyable tutorials and reviews of his latest tech toys on a regular basis. Derek’s technology setup and skill set doesn’t just feed me with inspiration, it fills me with envy.
Inspiration For: Content Creation, Design.
Darren Rowse
3 years ago Darren Rowse was a regular man working a regular day job. Now, he’s one of the top bloggers in the industry, working on ProBlogger, while running B5 Media, Darren keeps himself busy each and every day working on dozens of different weblogs.
Darren never fails to amaze me with what he’s done with ProBlogger, building up a one stop blogging tips site over the last few years - every single post Darren’s has written drives me to do great things just as he has.
Darren story of how he started his blogging venture online, and what he did to become successful is a story I’ll never become tired of hearing.
Inspiration For: Success, Drive, Determination.
Bryan Veloso
Bryan’s site Avalonstar has been running since he was first gifted the domain name by his father in 2000. Since then he has used it for many purposes, right now it’s a personal blog.
Bryan has a knack for constantly redesigning his blog. The Current version he released just one week ago is version 25 of Avalonstar, that’s a lot of re-designs in (just) 7 years.
Although the recent problems he’s publicly faced, I’ve enjoyed watching the evolution of Bryan online, from blogging through to creating fun social events - Bryan has gone through some tough times recently, though his perseverance has put him back in the place he deserves to be - in the headlines.
Inspiration For: Perseverance, Design.
Matt Brett
I only recently discovered Matt’s blog, though it’s as if I’ve been a reader of his blog for years. Matt is a design genius, he has his own style which I really love. Most of his designs are either dark, or have a very “illustrative” look to them.
I thrive on reading Matt’s latest blog posts, Tweets on Twitter, and viewing his latest design work for clients. Matt is a person we could all learn something from, he’s your typical everyday person who loves to have fun, to game, and most of all, seems very laid-back in his freelancing style.
Matt recently switched over from the dark side to a 24″ Apple iMac, I really enjoy reading his posts which showcase some of the things he’d done with his Mac, in particular, how he set up his Logitech MX Revolution mouse.
When there is a need for inspiration, I head over to Matt’s design portfolio and browse work he’s done in the past.
Inspiration For: Design, Attitude.
Steve Jobs
What can I say about Steve Jobs? Hard work, perseverance, a great eye for revolutionary products, and determination to succeed have all put this man in the place where he is today, one of the most respected CEOs of any company in the world.
I can’t even begin to say how much respect I have for Steve Jobs in the technology industry, although some have reported he isn’t the nicest man face-to-face, Steve Jobs holds my greatest respect, as my top source for inspiration. Just take a look at Apple.com, doesn’t that inspire you? Steve is behind that.
Inspiration For: World Domination. Hard Work.
Are there any people in particular you look up to and hope to succeed or become like one-day? Let me know!

I would say that a lot of my inspiration comes from Veerle Pieters blog @ http://veerle.duoh.com

Derek and Darren have been such an inspiration to me as well, in matters ranging from blogging, technology, Macs, etc.

Much better post Glenn. : )

Sorry Glenn, but I don’t understand how you can put Steve Jobs up there. I mean, yeah, he marketed the shit out of Apple back in the day, but he really doesn’t ‘do’ much. Unless you count sitting at your desk all day probably talking on the phone ‘doing’ much. He didn’t start Apple, Woz did, and Woz came up with a good load of the concepts and ideas for their first machines.
Cool guy though. Shame that he scared Woz off.

Derek and Darren are really great guys, I’ve had a chance to chat with both briefly. Darren’s story never gets old, and Derek is a great designer. If only I had 1/100th of their skills.

For me it’s the Google founders, Larry Page and Sergei Brin. Their dedication, innovation and humbleness always inspires me. Oh yep, and Steve Jobs’s attention to detail as well (Raises eyebrow at ‘World Domination’).
Oh, by the way, I saw your article on Scandyna speakers in this month’s MacGuide. Love the retro design.

They’re all great people, and really talented. Thanks for the links, I’ve found some new blogs to read.

The guys from 37signals are a great example of attitude and design/programing excellence.
Khoi Vihn is another great designer and there are more people who inspire me.
Woz made the iMac?, the iPod?(actually it was a employer who had the idea), the iPhone?, iTunes music store? woz created the “soul” of Apple inc, Jobs made the soul stronger and still does. :)
Great article

On the whole Steve Jobs thing, go watch a film called “Pirates of Silicon Valley”. I’ve seen it a few times now (including last night, when I got bored) and each time I look at it a different way.
On a level other than business, world domination and whatnot maybe Steve isn’t the number one role model: Jobs says that taking LSD was “one of the two or three most important things he has done in his life.” This point is really shown during the film.
And I’ve gone off topic.
Uhh.. people I want to aspire to… umm… I quite like 37signals. I like the whole small company, simple ideas and getting things done approach.

I learn a lot from Darren (problogger.net),he shares the secret of online business.

Wow, thanks for the kind words Glenn. I don’t consider myself a genius in any field, but shit, is it ever cool to hear that from someone else. ;)
And on that note, I’ve always questioned myself for the lack of design/freelance related posts that I publish. For a while there, I was just so busy that I didn’t have time for it and sort of lost a bit of my passion for design. But I’ve definitely got it back and have a couple drafts already started. Now, I just have to finish them. I think you’ve just given me a push, though.

Great post! I discovered a couple new blogs — thanks! :) It never ceases to amaze me just how much inspiration can be found on this little thing called the internet.

II was expecting you to put Paul Stamatiou there, too.
