Famous Mac User Setup: Scott Bourne
Apple April 15th, 2007“Famous Mac User Setup” is a new weekly feature I plan to run. Each week one famous Mac user in their respective right will be featured in a direct 4 question interview about their Mac setup.
Scott Bourne is widely recognized as a pioneer in the digital audio field. He is known for his work on Netradio, the world’s first internet radio network - O’Reilly Media, writing for their blog Inside Aperture - and Macbreak Weekly, a podcast he logs into on a weekly basis with other big Mac names such as Leo Laporte.
Scott also runs a few other blogs such as Podcasting Tricks, along with running Podango Productions in the commercial district of San Francisco, just off Mission Bay.
Here we take a look at where he gets his work done. The Mac setup of Scott Bourne.
What does your current Mac setup consist of?
My main workstation is a Two 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro, with 16GB or RAM, stock 250GB 7200-rpm HDD, ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB video card, One 16x SuperDrive, running Mac OSX 10.4.9 Tiger.
Hooked up to the Mac Pro are Dual-23″ Apple Cinema Displays. I also use two of the G-Tech G-RAID2 1500GB TITANIUM external drives for storage
Why have you chosen this machine?
I use this machine because it’s fast and works well in an audio setup.
What other Apple gear do you own?
I also own two MacBook Pro’s, one iMac 24″, and a Dual-Core Mac Pro.
What is your next planned upgrade to your workstation?
I probably won’t buy any new computers until next year when I’ll probably buy whatever new laptop is out.

Yep, a crazy amount. He also stated “That’s all it’d let me put in..” on the latest Macbreak Weekly when Leo said “What, how much RAM?”

Thanks for asking about my setup Glenn. One slight correction - Podango Productions is not run out of my home. We have an office in the commercial district of San Francisco broadly known as SOMA and DOGPATCH - just off Mission Bay. We’re three miles south of Alex Lindsay’s office at the PixelCorps.

You should call this theme ‘mac-envy’ for all those that think they *need* to have the best mac setup. In this case, I suspect that this is simply what is required for the digital music profession. It is the same logic that I used when buying an 20” iMac at home.
I use a supercomputer at work (a 2000+ CPU linux cluster, http://www.sharcnet.ca/Performance/index.php) for climate modeling. At home, I just don’t need that much noise ;) I’m a hobbyist photographer (Canon 5D/G7) and my iMac is great for managing my thousands of photos via lightroom/photoshop. I use gmail for e-mail, browse/blog with firefox, manage a 50GB music collection in iTunes (ver 7.x stinks with a large collection), tinker with garage band & my piano, and I can easily log into computers at work using terminal/ssh. Combined with an eyeTV, M-Audio Sonica, speakers, and I’ve also got a great place to watch TV and the occasional movie. It is a fine setup and cost me only $2500.
I found this post via 9rules… Honestly, seeing a snapshot photo of some random guy’s fast computer is not that exciting to me. You could make it more interesting by spending a little more time explaining who this guy is, what he’s done, why this setup is needed, how it is used, how much thought went into its design, etc…

Great idea for a weekly feature too! It’s too common to see whatshisname’s rig on flickr, but showing of famous peoples rigs - now THATS something new.
Leo Laporte would certainly be one mans rig I would be interested in. And I hope you are able to wind up a nice collection of DIFFERENT people. One who does graphical stuff, one developer, one scientist maybe?

Actually, there is. Scott uses this setup primarily for Pro Tools - which in turn, will and can allocate all of the system resources and put them to good use.

I couldn’t agree more Andy, I love the look of Scott’s setup - it has me itching to get my hands on some new gear. Unfortunately, I’ll be waiting till October before any planned upgrades.
I have many lined up and ready to go. Leo Laporte is one person I’d love to feature. In the queue I currently have a developer, designer, blogger, podcaster, and more all ready to go. I’ll be releasing these posts on a weekly basis.

I have heard Scott talk about his setup many times on Mac Break Weekly and its great to finally see it! Makes my little MacBook with 19″ external display setup look like a PDA.
Excellent idea for a series Glenn. I hope you do get an interview with Leo. Why are you waiting until October for upgrades? Is it because of the Leopard delay?
One small (or large as it were) thing I would change is if you could have a larger version of the setup image by clicking on the regular size image. That would be great. Thanks!
