Glenn’s Typical Morning Routine
Personal March 4th, 2007It’s taken a lot of trial and error to find the right structure to my mornings, but I think I’ve finally found the right one. Last night I sat down and worked out a morning routine, it looks like this.
Wake Up at around 6AM. I like to rise early as the two times I work best are late at night, and early in the morning.
Breakfast is the first thing I get after I wake. While I’m eating breakfast, I open Mail and start going through each email, clicking on one at a time and replying or taking action on action, then I archive the message. Once this process is finished, I am left with a perfectly clear email inbox.
Blogging is the next step I take. I like to do this before I pop open my RSS feeds, forums, or daily visited websites. The usual routine is to write a post, edit the post, and then publish it.
The next step comes the RSS Reader. I open up NewsFire and are presented with around 300 new items from the previous 12 hours. I immediately go into my blog comments feed, and reply to any new comments. Next I move onto Flickr comments, and reply to those.
Once the comments are read and replied to, I can sit back and read my feeds from bottom to top (least favorite sites are listed at the bottom, most favorite at the top). While reading posts, I jot down notes of ideas, create PDFs of articles I want to keep and store. Once all the feed are read and the inbox count at zero, I quit NewsFire and file created PDFs.
What does a typical morning look like for you?

Wake up at about 5.30-6, flip open macbook, check email/feeds. Fall back asleep, wake up right before 7, check email/feeds again this time replying, etc.
Hop on iChat. talk to a few friends on the east coast. Get up, go take shower. Leave shower to get changed, go downstairs, eat breakfast, then head to school at around 8.10.
On a morning that I’m blogging, I’ll usually get up at 6 and stay up, go downstairs with laptop in hand and have a cup of tea/coffee while I’m blogging. It usually takes me about 30 mins to read through feeds/email then I can push out about 3 posts (lately I haven’t been able to…since a certain blog is down…)

For me it’s:
6:30 Wake up, check NewsFire, Digg, and Mail
6:40 Shower
6:50 Finish checking RSS, Mail, Flickr, etc,
7:00 Eat breakfast
7:15 Go through Digg, read articles I didn’t get to before
7:30 Leave
I don’t bother filing anything, seems like a waste of time to me.
March 4th, 2007 at 10:39 am
Ummm, I have school.
But when I get back @ around 4:00 PM (est) , I read all my RSS from NewsFire. (with the exception of digg, which I sometimes just “Mark All Read” ;-)
Then I usually go to the MacHeist forums, and after that just search for something I’m interested in on Google. Then browse random Mac-centric websites.
Oh wait, I just noticed: I don’t have a routine.
March 4th, 2007 at 11:07 am
7:00 My alarm goes off
7:03 I stumble out of bed and shut it off, then go back to sleep
7:30 I wake up
7:40 Barely awake, I somehow find my way to the kitchen to eat breakfast (sometimes it’s just “breakfast”)
7:50 Get to school some way or another
My morning isn’t nearly as productive as yours, or most others’ above me, Glenn, hehe.
March 4th, 2007 at 11:21 am

March 4th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
Wake up at 8:20 and sprint to school. Back to Newsfire with about 350 items, and Mail. Then Digg. Then Flickr. Then some forums.

It’s easy: I don’t have one. I usually just see who’s online, check facebook, then shower and have breakfast and stuff, but it depends on when I have class.
March 4th, 2007 at 2:27 pm
Hasn’t this been done before Glenn? ;) Anyway.
5:45- Alarm clock goes off
5:50- Check Gmail, reply to critical emails

6:15- Check my social networking sites, Last.fm, Twitter and Flickr for any messages left for me.
6:20- Check forums I frequent- iLounge, MacRumors. Repy to interesting stuff.

March 4th, 2007 at 2:41 pm
also, I will try that method you have of creating pdfs of articles you like. that is genius, except won’t it take up a lot of space?
March 4th, 2007 at 8:48 pm
Indraneel, it doesn’t take up too much space, and gives me a high-res copy of the page which is fully scaleable. More on this soon.

June 21st, 2007 at 11:34 pm
Wake up at 5am (when lucky)
Sit in my study and listen to inside self
Think a lot for about hot 10min
Read a passage in one of my books (mainly Robin Sharma’s The Greatness Guide)
Fire up my laptop and start writing my blog
Then attend to anything else from anyone who screams for my attention
I don’t do breakfast - unless if I tried harder.
