What Would You Like From New Apple iMac’s?
Apple February 24th, 2007
Rumors of Apple refreshing the iMac and Mac Pro lines are riding high as of recent, there are some great things about these two machines, but there are a few things I’d like to see changed, revised, and added. to Apple’s top-selling consumer Macintosh, the iMac.
More Space For RAM
The current batch of iMac has two slots for RAM, one can accomodate a 1GB chip, and the other holds a larger, more expensive 2GB chip. It’d be nice to slim the gap between the iMac and the Mac Pro by adding another RAM slot into the iMac, and increasing it’s capacity to 4GB (2×1GB, 1×2GB).
Easily Replaceable Video Cards
The video card is currently hidden behind stacks of wires and curcuit boards in the current iMac’s interior, even trying to open the iMac to upgrade the video card voids warrenty.
To increase the product life on the iMac it’d be nice to have easy access to an area on the iMac where custom video cards could be inserted and installed at the users will.
Removing The Chin
One thing which looks rather out of place on the current batch of iMac’s, and has since the G5 iMac, is the chin below the screen. I’d love to see the 2-3 inches removed from this area, and I think Apple are quite capable of making this change especially in the 24″ iMac, due to it’s sheer size.
The iMac could be a killer desktop with a few of these changes made, mainly on that form of expandability. Give us more options Apple!
What are you hoping Apple includes in updated iMac’s?

A black imac would look sweet on my desk :)

The ability to turn off the display…

1TB HDD. Then the chin.
February 24th, 2007 at 9:23 am
Greg, I’d love to be able to have a 1TB drive in there, or possible have two slots for drives, just like in the Mac Pro.

The chin is a big one for me, Hard Drive space is also crucial for me.
February 24th, 2007 at 9:32 am
I don’t much care for the iMacs, but a black one would be really hot.
February 24th, 2007 at 10:05 am
Black seems to be a pretty popular request. Would you guys really buy a black iMac? I love the classic white look to Apple products.

After owning an iMac for about a month now, I have to agree with Dylan with the ability to turn off the display as something I’d like to see in future iMacs. Room for an extra hard drive would be really nice too.

Isn’t the Macbook Apple’s top selling mac?
February 24th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
I’d like to see dvi input on the next iMac. To be able to use my mac book on that screen would be nice, but mainly for my xbox 360. Also i’d like to see more ram and hard drive space. I agree with the chin issue but it’s not a big issue for me.

I don’t really care for desktops anymore… I’m just waiting for Leopard to get my MacBook… I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!
February 24th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
I agree about the vid cards. I think that the imac would be awesome if there were more easily upgradeable/optional parts. Plus - that would be big money for Apple. Sort of the Nintendo Wii approach (not the kiddishness…). Everyone likes customization. I DON’T think they should go the PC direction though and try to support everything. Apple’s obvious advantage is that they hold the keys on what actually goes in their machines - a good thing in some ways…

What Dylan said… perfect.

I think I like the chin. Without it, the iMac looks just like a monitor. Maybe some people like that, I don’t know. If you want expandability, that’s what the Mac Pro is for. Tough noogies.
February 24th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
The current 24-inch iMac has 4.5 inches of chin space. Personally, I thing the it should go down to 1 inch like the rest of the border and expand the screen size if necessary (isn’t 17-inches getting too small for a PC). Lastly, can’t you turn off the display via System Preferences> Energy Saver> Put display to sleep?

I have to say, being a future iMac owner (plan on getting one, or a MacPro, after Leopard is released) I would really like to see the option for more ram and for more hard drive space. I have enough external space, but it would be nice to have some more internal space.

It would be great if the iMac came in black :-D

Black
Memory card slot (SD, MMC, CompactFlash)
More USB
Turning off display
Smaller frame around display

Don’t iMacs use notebook graphics cards, if I am correct you couldn’t really upgrade them anyway?
February 25th, 2007 at 12:53 pm
The 24″ iMac has an upgradable Mobile PCI Express Module (MXM) card. These are scarce now, but will be widely available at some point. It will allow for laptops and slim computers like the iMac to have upgradable video cards in the future.

Yeah I disliked the chin from the very first moment I saw the iMacs.
I think they shouldn’t change the design too much but removing the chin would be a good improvement.
Additionaly they could try to make the iMac a bit thinner, although this might be impossible because of air circulation.
@Black iMac: I hope they won’t unveil a black one (I don’t like the whole “going-black” trend at apple), but looking at the current Mac-lineup this seems to be a comprehensible step.

I wouldn’t buy an iMac, possibly because I think the Mini is cooler, but it would still be nice if it existed.
And yeah, I’m not all for this white-gone-black stuff, but the photoshopped black iMac photo they posted on Engadget was just too damn sexy.

I think Cesar has a good point about the chin and size of the screen. The 17″ is too small these days, so what I’m looking for is dropping the 17″, and having an iMac bigger than the 24″, like a 30″ or something.

the chin is where the power supply goes. so removing the chin as u say would likely require an external power supply like the mac mini. i certainly wouldnt mind.
March 24th, 2007 at 5:17 am
I work from home off of a Windows laptop, so it would be nice to have a DVI connection to leverage the monitor for other devices….otherwise its a MacPro for me.
March 26th, 2007 at 5:12 pm
though it would probably cause some confusion, i think the next gen imac should look like the current apple cinema displays, maybe even with multi-colored aluminum like the ipod nanos (too retro? maybe). if SWGS is right about the chin being where the power supply goes, i honestly wouldn’t mind sacrificing some space under my desk for an external.

Upgradeability within the imac line is all important, but I doubt it will happen. As it is right now there is a built in obelescence as tech moves forward leaving apples latest and greatest in the dust, the only solution is to buy a new mac. There is no real end of life cycle on a pc since upgrading to stay current is quite inexpensive.

All you idiots who are complaining about turning off the display are idiots… Instead of holding the power button for 6 seconds…hold it for like 2-3 seconds and the screen shuts off..and to turn it back on…do the same thing or move your mouse/keyboard…

Cool.
