Gravatar 2.0, Finally Back Online
Web February 18th, 2007Gravatar, the extremely popular globally recognized avatar system is back online after been down for months, and causing some users to think it might have died a silent web death.
Registration is now open for the new 2.0 Public Beta. Previously registered members don’t need to sign up for a new account and can continue using their existing login details.
For those who don’t know what Gravatar does, it simply allows you to upload an 80×80 pixel avatar image to your account. When you post a comment on Gravatar enabled sites or blogs, the avatar will automatically show up without you having to complete any further steps.
What kind of image do you use as your global avatar, or do you have separate ones for different sites and forums?

Well I actually have only one real avatar which I use only for 9rules, my own blog and and Newsvine - a pretty plain passport-type photo you can see on my “About” page. I really believe that showing your face to the rest of the world increases credibility, and I have nothing to hide ;-).

I’m a fan of Gravatar. I like to have 1 avatar that people can identify me around the web with. The one I use the most is the mandala I painted, which I’m also currently using on Digg.

Glenn, have you noticed your category buttons are broken? I mean they all come up with the same results, which are all your posts in chronological descending order.

I just signed up for a Gravatar. I’ve heard about them, and it sounds like a good idea.

I’ve stopped using Gravatar. It showed me how using external services can cripple my site. Even if they can get their act together, it would add noticeable load times to larger posts.

Looks cool, I always wondered what it was. (I saw a link to it on Adam Bett’s blog http://www.artofadambetts.com )
