I Trimmed Down My RSS Reader, Free Time Galore
Productivity February 5th, 2007I spend around two hours each and every day in my RSS reader, what do I gain from this? I get the latest news in my favorite industries, and a few good articles to read, but nothing more. The time spent in my RSS reader is wasted in my opinion, the less time I’m behind NewsFire, the more work I can complete.

I recently just sat down and cleared out my RSS reader, removing over 200 feeds to a new count of under 50. In the past I woke up to around 500 new RSS items, now it’s around 100. The time it takes to clear the new items has decreased ten fold, doing wonders for my productivity.
How did I choose what to remove and what to keep? Firstly, I went through all the blogs which are updated more than 10 times daily, and choose which ones were important to me, TUAW was the only one.
Next I went through blogs which hadn’t updated for more than a month, and un-subscribed from all of those. The final step was to go through and pick out 30 of my favorite blog feeds - ones which I always get excited when I see the unread icon next to. I kept all of these blogs and removed the others which I was less fussed about.
The result? 50 feeds, less updates, less time in RSS, and more free time to blog.

I got NewsFire from MacHeist and it was only then that I got into the whole RSS feed thing - so I’m fairly new to the game anyway.
I have 15 feeds, from select blogs and about three news sites. Since the blogs don’t get updated every day, they don’t cause much of a problem!
And yes, your blog is one of them! Hehe. =P

Hope I’m still in there!

Haha
I did the same thing, I have a dozen blogs, 4 apple sites, and a few feeds to see when apps are updated.

I was cleaning out my feeds a few days ago, and took your previous tips to consideration while doing so. You’ve helped a ton in organizing my stuff…great post! :)

Thanks guys, and just a quick note, all three of you still remain in my reader ;-)

This is something I want to do for quite some time.
The amount of time I spend reading not-too-important feeds is really frightening.
My approach will be kinda different. I’ll sort my feeds not by subject but by urgency. Meaning which ones I should check daily, weekly etc.
And I’ll delete everything concerning Mac apps, except maybe Mac Apper (;)). I tell you, MacUpdate and VersionTracker are BAD feeds for your unread feeds counter.

TUAW was the only frequently update feed you wanted to keep? Interesting…
Was Quantum Thinking (my blog) ever in your reader, Glenn?
But yeah, I totally know what you mean. RSS is a killer. Information overload and all. Half my life is spent reading unimportant stuff. I’m trying to cut down my feeds, too.

Dude, 200 feeds? That sounds like a full time job!
My RSS list has grown ever since I got NewsFire. I now have about 50 feeds, some are updated very often, some barely ever. I think deletibg digg would make a big difference in my time-wasting.
But, for now, 50 feeds is just fine with me.

Speaking of feeds, Glenn can you get a real feed? I hate FeedBurner! :’(
That little flame favicon in NewsFire makes me so mad!

And that goes for Phill Ryu and UNEASYsilence too.

It’s good to rethink how one spends their time every once in a while. I need to clean up my feedlist….
Could you post/send me your opml if it’s not too private?
Thanks!

Hey Glenn
I am rather new to the whole RSS thing! I wondered what feeds you would suggest for someone who loves, apple, photography, gettings things done and anythhing tech
Many thanks and keep up the great work

Smaran, you’ve been in my reader for a while now.
To the others requesting the OPML, sure. I’ll do that now.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:36 am
50??? Don’t you have school? I can barely get through my 16 feeds without wasting a ton of time. 2 of those 16 feeds are this blog and macapper, glenn, so be happy; you’re in my selective group ;-)

If this was for your productivity, why eliminate those who only are updated randomly?
Those don’t hurt your productivity, but give worthwhile content.

I just did the same thing, but I only deleted the feeds that I don’t read when under time constraints.
February 5th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
I have 197 feeds and it takes me close to 45mins to whip through, if anything there are days I wish I had more to read not less.
February 5th, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Hmm, good idea. I’ll really need to getting around to cleaning up — but my time’s always taken reading RSS feeds. :P

Ahh…75 down to 60. Thanks for the inspiration, Glenn. I always feel like I am wasting a lot of time just scanning headlines.
@Kevin - Most of the gems in my feed reader are only updated every once in a while. They are the articles I am most likely to actually read without feeling like I should be doing something better with my time.

2 types:
- Crap that you have to sift thru that makes you mad about wasting time.
- Great entries in great blogs that get updated about 1 x Week – 1 x Month

Haha, nice to know, Glenn! :-)
Sign up at share.opml.org. It basically generates statistics from everyone’s OPMLs and hosts your OPML for you. It also recommends other users that are subscribed to similar feeds as you.

Thanks Glenn! You inspired me on getting back to NewsFire now!
AND slimmed down my feeds. I have like 25 now, instead of the 90 I had before. Thanks!

I was changing my RRS reader from NewsFire to endo this weekend. Since I had to manually move every feed (220) between the readers I put a few on the side to check later why I had subscribed to it and if I could get rid of it. One was glenwolsey.com.
Now, when I checked this site I remembered why I subscribed. Productivity articles, and some of them quite good ones. And I came here to this article. So I decided to put a little comment although it’s a bit late.
The main reason I am changing from NewsFire to endo is that I use iGTD for my GTD stuff. It has a very cool option that is very handy when one sees feed but want to read later. Click F6 and a link to the feed goes into iGTD inbox. Give it a context, like @Read and when you have the time you can click the link and read the article.
I really don’t see any problem with having many subscriptions going. One does not have to read everything. The main purpose using RSS readers it to see headlines quickly and not having to go to all those sites to see what is happening. But if one is tempted to read every article, why bother to use RRS reader?
To finish the story, I only threw away two blog subscriptions and six news feeds.

Exactly Sigurdur, I find it okay to have so many feeds, there’s nothing stopping me from clicking “Mark All Read” every once in a while, it doesn’t hurt to miss a few stories.
How are you liking Endo a week after the switch?
June 22nd, 2007 at 1:57 am
My experience with Endo is great. It sort of gives me a new angle on RSS. Reading a story is one click less than in NewsFire. Maybe I was not using NF to it’s extent but in Endo I am using both groups and smart folders to ease things. Features like “Show only Unread” and other filters are great to prevent loosing the soul.
Simple filtering like “iGTD” in Title is handy when one wants to see everything that is going on about some specific subject.
Reading RSS takes time but if the subject has a real value I don’t mind as long as I have it under control. I think (hope) Endo will help me better with that.
Thanks for replying.
