Re-designed, Re-branded
Personal September 23rd, 2006Well, this has got to be one of the quickest, yet most beautiful simplistic design I have ever made for a site.
First, a little back story. Throughout the past few weeks I’ve been dugg to the Digg homepage many times, and my CMS (content management system) Symphony just didn’t handle the traffic well enough, so I decided to make the switch to WordPress.
WordPress is the most popular CMS for bloggers, and it is also the most easily customizable. There are hundreds of plug-in’s available, and I can now make blog posts via the amazing application Ecto, and the Flock browser. Two more defining reasons as to why I switched to WordPress.

Enough with the rambling, let’s take a look at the new sites features!
- All new design
New design, new colour scheme, new everything. It wasn’t just a fresh coat of paint, it was a complete re-design.
- Awesome new comment system
You can now subscribe to comments and get updates delivered to you email, and they also now have their own RSS feed. Perfect for keeping up to date. The comment system design has also been overhauled, and you can expect Ajax comment posting very soon.
- Tags
Want to find something in the archives quickly? Or just like to browse around quickly and efficiently. All the posts are now tagged, and can easily be grouped. Expect a separate “tag-cloud” page soon.
- Similar Articles
While viewing an article, you can press the Similar button in the sidebar and a new section will collapse showing entries in the blog similar to the one you are reading.
- Freshness
Want the latest scoop while viewing an article? The last 5 articles are only one click away with the new Freshness tab.
- Full browser support
The site now perfectly functions in all the major browsers. Safari, IE, FireFox, Flock, Shiira, OmniWeb.
- Search window
Want to search the blog archives quickly? Simply hit the “Search!” button in the navigation bar and bam! You are presented pop up window with the latest 5 entries, and a box to search the blog.
Enjoy the site guys! And please leave your thoughts, ideas, and anything else you might like to add below! Happy browsing.

Sorry guys, huge problems with bugs at the moment. I’m working on it.

very simple although i have noticed on shorter posts (wich you obviously seem to do alot of) hides the comment section cause the ads down the right side have pushed it down, it is kind of a preference thing tho so well see what other people say, hopefully im just being a picky designer

Gorgeous new design. Love the font of the “Glenn Wolsey” title.

Please change the feed icon at the bottom it doesnt really fit with the rest of the design.
Other than that I love it!
You could do with more friendly urls though.

Nice theme by 5thirtyone but not a re-design, it wasn’t yours to start with.
You need to tweak the shit out of it though.
September 24th, 2006 at 1:05 am
@ Chris
Yep, great template by 5ThirtyOne which I then customized. It’ll be even more heavily customized when I get some more time.

- Permalinks will be more friendly very soon too.

24th September - New RSS Icon Added, thanks Codie Westphall.

For some reason I prefer the previous design… seems like I’ve seen this one a billion times on the web already.
September 24th, 2006 at 2:35 am
RSS icons bounces too much
typeface is way too large, the majority of content should be ABOVE the fold of the average user’s screen, not below
the bevel star burst thing is just hideous. doesn’t fit in the website at all and looks like tpt made it
there is no uniqueness anymore to the website, it’s just another wordpress blog using a downloaded theme that appears 10,000,435 times on the web
September 24th, 2006 at 3:33 am
Not to shabby Glenn. All in all its a pretty nice, simple and fresh design. I like it. That bouncing feed logo has got to be sorted out though ;-P
Although its nice, I am a little dissapointed that it was just a downloaded theme. *Shrugs*

Sorry, but I really don’t like the design. Old one was a lot better.
September 24th, 2006 at 4:40 am
just realized: people will get confused if newer comments are on the top.
September 24th, 2006 at 4:44 am
@andy.s
Yep… I did. I wondered why my comment had not appeared :D

Nice job Glenn. The dark header with a static height works well. Let’s hope that WordPress stands up a little better compared to Symphony. Make sure to load the WP Cache plugin for added protection.

Don’t like it, compared to the old version it doesn’t seem very clear or simple, the template isn’t that nice, and things like not being able to see how many comments have been made on an article annoys me.
September 24th, 2006 at 7:52 am
@ Name
I plan to have an indicator for comments on an article like the V1 design had, it’s currently in the works.
September 24th, 2006 at 2:30 pm
The RSS needs to be fixed. I gotta say that I prefered the older design.
