Canon 350D vs 400D?
Photography September 16th, 2006Update: I’ve taken the plunge on the 350D. To check out some sample images, check out the posts filed under photography.
As many of you know, I’m currently saving for my first digital SLR. I’m not sure when I’ll be purchasing it, but the advice I get from this post might determine how much longer it will take me to save. My question is, 350D or 400D?

The RRP of the 400D in New Zealand is $1799.00, and the 350D, $1299.
Main differences (400D on left, 350D on right):
- 10MP - 8MP
- 27 continuous JPEG shots - 14 continuous JPEG shots
- 9 Point Autofocus - 7 Point Autofocus
Those are pretty much the main 3 factors that actually bother me. 99% of the photos taken with my DSLR wont end up printed, so the MP issue can almost be crossed out.
I plan to get into cricket photography, but I wont be taking “bursts” of more than 5 shots at a time at matches, so the continuous shooting isn’t too much of an issue.
Autofocus? I don’t know enough about this to post my views.
So, is it worth saving at least $500 NZD by purchasing the Canon EOS 350D in order to get my camera quicker?
Update: I’ve taken the plunge on the 350D. Thanks for the advice!

well, the 400 comes with an innovative cleaning system, so i gues after some time of using you’ll be noticing little dots, the 400’s vibrading filter will avoid this…
also i don’t know if somebody told you, but the megapixel-myth isn’t true, my uncle has a 4.2 megapixel camera and i have a 6 megapixel camera and most of his photos are better, altough his camera was cheaper it got beter lens(carl zeiss), mine got Some hp lenses…
but i would be happy with a 350D one :P

We’ve already had this discussion, but if you look at the major differences they’re not amazingly fantastically improved. It takes 3 seconds to take the lens off and wipe the sensor and the two resolutions aren’t *that* different.

Wait until the reviews of new cameras come in from Photokina (Cologne Germany held later this month).
Sigma, Olympus and Panasonic will introduce a new Four Thirds joint operation which may be interesting.

dust is easily cleaned off with the likes of a giotto rocket blaster, for US $12.
MP difference really doesn’t matter at this point. it may matter more on compacts, but all dlsrs will provide much better resolution & photos than any compact.
the 350d is 3456 x 2304 the 400d is 3888 x 2592
so the “improvement” of the 400d is just 7% horizontally and 12 % vertically… not really very significant. in fact, practically unnoticeable.
bursts are unpredictable, not because of the camera, but because of the nature of the action: the moment of interest might happen between your image exposures. best to aim for the right moment.
but if you do take a burst, the memory card will play some role as well.
the autofocus info is just number of points on the screen on which the camera can focus (you choose one). my last camera had 5; current one has 11; frankly, I find it easier to focus with the middle, then recompose by moving the camera, rather than fiddling with the focus point.
for speed in sports, you’ll most likely focus on one spot (e.g. the center), so this isn’t such a big deal, I think.
but you’ve left off the most important part: the lens(es). these are utterly essential to taking good photos, and more importantly retain their value when you upgrade bodies (which you will). It might be helpful to determine what you want to do with your camera, find the appropriate lens(s) and then see what actual cost is.
My guess is that the 350D with a great lens (or a d50) will be a much better choice than than a 400d with the kit lens (which, for all entry-level cameras, is not particularly good).

I agree with Mike, get the 350D instead and use the savings to get yourself a telephoto lens for your cricket matches and other lenses for whatever needs you may have.
I personally use a 350D for sports photography like frisbee, soccer, swimming and it’s adequate enough. I know a few other photographers who use the 350D for sports and they have good shots too.
Goodluck and have fun with photography Glenn!

after reading a review of the 350D on dpreview, i have to agree, the 350 is a realy nice choice…
i think you should get the 350D(body and kit lenses) and a another lens, or buy the body only and buy even better lenses…
but i’m not a professional photographer nor dslr owner, so i can’t realy help you…
ps: please, please change the layout of the “posts”, i mean, the category, date and time, it’s horible right now, and for the comments 2, it’s a big pain in the as reading comments with the current layout

I own a 350D and it’s a great DSLR indeed. However, one of the weakest point in the 350 is, imho, the autofocus mechanism.
I would rather wait for some in-depth review of the 400d. If its autofocus system is the SAME mounted on the 30d, this would be a great plus.

Fellow Kiwi, 350D owner here. Bought it about 4 months ago and now I wish I had waited for 400D. Mainly because of the dust cleaning system, MegaPixels, bigger LCD, and 9 AF Points. The last time I checked the price difference between 350D and 400D is only NZ $295. inc 18-55 Kit.
Though I’d like to say that I am very happy with my 350D and will be saving for lenses and SpeedLite.
p.s. Also a Cricket fan, looking forward to Cricket season to put my 350D in test with 90-300mm telephoto.
p.p.s. 9 AF point will definately get you better result in action sports and of course to capture beautiful NZ landscape

Hi,
I am a 350D owner since april. In my point of view, if you are buying your first dslr, get the 400D… price is near. Only for 350D owner, it is not worth sell their second hand camera for a low price and put money to change to almost the same.

Hello there,
I need an opinion about those two models 350D and 400D.I need a digital camera for my my job.I want it to use for commercial photos, presentation catalogs, etc. In here I have read that’s not a major fact that 350D has 8MP and 400D has 10 MP.And another question…Package kits are the same(other things beside cleaning system)?Cleaning is so important? Please excuse my bad english, hope all of U understand.

Hello manifest, honestly, right now I would go with the 400D. The price has come down considerably since it was first released, and overall, it is the better camera.
Good luck with the purchase.

hello Glenn, i’m pretty glad I found this discusion.. It helped me a bit in making my decision to buy 400D. I utterly agree, that it is silly to sell 350D and buy the newer one, but as I don’t have any of them I will buy the 400D one..I hope:) Saving money now… :)

The 350D is a better choice and the money you save can be funded towards better lenses / accessories. Good choice Glenn!
